Backgammon- An overview
Backgammon is one of the most skillfully created and fun games available online. The objective of the game is of course to win! Designed for two players each in possession of fifteen checkers. Players take turns to throw the two dice and make moves around the board in accordance with the numbers on the dice. The aim being to get all of these fifteen checkers to a home base and then off the board before their opponent to win the game!
Backgammon the game explained
At the beginning of the game the board should be set up in the starting position and once the roll of the dice has determined which player will be first to move, the game can begin. Each player will move his checkers in accordance with the dice .A player can only move his checkers to a triangle that does not already have two are more checkers belonging to the other player on it, to open spaces, or to a triangle that the player already has his checkers on. If a player leaves one checker on a triangle, (a blot), it can be ‘hit’ by the opposing player. Being ‘hit’ it is to be taken off to the bar and the checker can only reenter the game when that player throws the dice in accordance with a free space in his opponent’s home base. That checker will then have to journey around the board again to his own home base. If there is no triangle open that player will lose his turn and have to wait for his next roll. A player can not bear off his checkers until all have reached the home base. Here, the roll of the dice corresponds to a triangle. If, however all of the checkers are in triangle one and two, any dice roll higher will allow the checkers to be taken off. On the flipside, if the checkers are on triangles six and five and a smaller number is rolled, the checker will have to move further up the base and can not be taken off. The winning player is the person to have all his checkers off the board before his opponent. There are different types of wins, a Gammon, a game worth a double where the opponent has not yet begun to bear off and a Backgammon, worth a triple, where the opponent still has checkers either on the bar or in the winners home board
The most popular versions of the game revealed
A number of alternatives to Internet Backgammon exist and all are available online for you today. Acey Deucy is a fun, fast paced version of backgammon, where all players begin the game off the board, with an acey deucy roll, a 1-2 being the most valuable roll of the game, allowing you to pick any double you wish. Hyper Backgammon- Played with the cube and differing in that players begin with 7 points, to increase in advancing rounds and with three checkers on points 22, 23, 24 also differs from normal backgammon in that the Jacoby rule is in play. Nackgammon- Created by Nack Ballard; this game is lengthier and has players starting in a different position, with only four checkers on the mid and 6- point and 2 extra on the 23 point. Tapa- meaning ‘bottle top’ is a strategic game, with the same aim as in Backgammon but with one major difference. Blots are not taken out once ‘hit’. Instead the opponents checker remains on top of the blot giving the opponent a point. Narde- Popular in Kazachstan, this game of chance has both players moving their checkers the same way around the board, where rolls of doubles do not allow for four moves as in Backgammon and where players do not have the opportunity to hit in the game. Gul Bara- Likened to Narde this games main difference is the power of double rolls. By rolling a double 1 the player can move 4 ones, 4 twos, 4 threes etc. Feuga- This Greek variation has players placing their checkers on the same point to begin, both moving anti clockwise around the board, where hitting is not permitted. Diceless backgammon- Popular in Uzbekistan and Azerbajdzhan Diceless Backgammon is set up slightly differently, has both players moving around the board anti-clockwise, and unable to hit each other.
