Timing
This refers to the length of time you expect to hold on to a advantageous position in the game
Non-contact position
The situation whereby the remaining checkers on the board have passed those of the opponent and can therefore not be captured
Racing Position
Refers to a players position in the game in terms of the pip count- the player in the lead is that with the lower pip count
Quadrant
One of the four quarter areas of the backgammon board containing six triangles
Drop
An abandonment and therefore a forfeiting of the game as a result of rejecting an offer of a double by the opposing player
Bear in
This is where one or more checkers is moved into the home board, readying them to be taken off the board altogether
Bar
Usually a raised ridge found in the centre of the board where pieces that are hit reside until they can reenter the game
Pip
Alludes to one point of the twenty-four on the board
Pip count
The total number of points a player has remaining until all his checkers are removed from the board
Capture
When a checker is hit by one of an opposing player and is considered captured and placed on the bar
Flunk
Whereby a player does not throw a number on the dice that corresponds to a free space on the opponent’s home board, disabling that checker from reentering the game
Triangle
The triangles on which the checkers sit and are moved around the board are numbered one through to twenty-four and alternate in colour Triangle one is the first triangle in a players' home board and twenty-four, the last triangle in the outer board.
Blot
A single checker that can be hit and taken off the board by the opposing
Outer board
The quarter section of the backgammon board in the furthest location
Back man
The most distant checker on the board
Hit Loose
A situation where you hit an opposing player’s checker but leave yourself open to be hit in return
